The Course in brief

The Master of Science (MSc) degree course in AEB forms a specialist able to understand and use conventional and advanced biotechnologies in project development and technological applications in the agricultural and environmental sectors.

The study plan includes front class lectures, seminars, lab practicals, visits, trainings or stages at both local university labs and other public and private research institutions or companies. The students will be able to customize the study plan through elective study units and a practical training period abroad.

Job profile

This course provides the ability to master general scientific information and methodology, specific professional knowledge in order to use conventional and advanced biotechnologies in project development and technological applications with the following objectives:

  • agroecosystem management, including the introduction of genetically characterized plants, animals and microbes;
  • study, conservation and use of agricultural genetic resources of plants, animals and microbes;
  • molecular characterization of food products for quality control;
  • genetic selection of plants, animals and microbes for improved quantity and quality of agricultural or agro-industrial products, including those destined to industrial, environmental, pharmaceutical, medical or veterinary applications;
  • genetic transformation techniques for plants, animals and microbes;
  • control of GMO presence in food products and risk evaluation related to the presence of GMOs in the environment, for the correct application of the precautionary principle;
  • quality control of the seed and nursery industry products.
Professional profiles

In Italy, the graduate can operate as a professional after admission to the official list of Biotechnologists or Agronomists (ISTAT categories: Biotecnologi - 2.3.1.1.4; Agronomi e forestali - 2.3.1.3.0)

The graduate can find employement in the agricultural and environmental sectors, in counseling and project development and managing, in the advanced agricultural and environmental biotechnology fields. The graduate can work in public and private research institutions

Learning outcome

Graduates will master methodological and scientific aspects of biotechnologies as well as professional skills to use conventional and advanced biotechnologies to develop and implement research projects and technological application with the following objectives:

  • studying, conserving and using agricultural plant, animal and microbial genetic resources;
  • characterizing food products for quality control by molecular techniques;
  • selecting plants, animals and microorganisms to improve yield and quality of agricultural and agro-industrial products, and to obtain products for pharmaceutical, industrial, environmental, medical and veterinary applications;
  • applying genetic transformation techniques in plants, animals and microorganisms;
  • managing agro-ecosystems using genetically characterized plants, animals and microorganisms;
  • performing risk analysis for the presence of genetically modified organisms (GMO) and derived products in foods, feeds and in the environment, according to a correct application of the precautionary principle;
  • performing quality control of seed and nursery plant propagation materials.

The study plan includes class lectures, seminars, lab practice, visits, traineeships at research institutions and industry. The student can customize the curriculum with elective activities and Erasmus+ stages.
